Spry Fox, the company behind titles including Cozy Grove and Alphabear, has been acquired by Netflix.
The independent Seattle studio is Netflix’s sixth studio and its fourth purchase since September 2021.
Spry Fox will “help expedite our creative development in another favorite genre and contribute to the expanding range of Netflix’s games portfolio that will offer something for everyone,” Netflix’s vice president of game studios Amir Rahimi stated on the company’s website after the acquisition was revealed.
In his own blog post, Spry Fox CEO David Edery reassured fans that the firm will continue to concentrate on “cozy games,” such as Cozy Grove 2 and an unannounced “bigger, non-violent MMO.”
According to Edery, “no change in our present development activities” means that all previously released games will continue to be available for download on their respective platforms. He went on to explain how having Netflix as an owner would help Spry Fox.
With “additional backing and resources to create those games better and deliver them to more people across the globe,” he added, “we can continue developing the games that we were already making and wanted to produce.”
“Rather than worrying about how our games will turn a profit, we can now concentrate on making them as fun and rewarding as possible for our gamers. Within Netflix, we have the opportunity to work with other imaginative individuals to improve our work and methods.”
Nearly a year has passed since Netflix first introduced gaming on its platform. Thirty-five games are now accessible to subscribers, 14 are in production at in-house studios, and a further 55 are in the works via collaborations with publishers like Ubisoft: Eggy Car, as revealed last month.
In September 2021, Netflix bought Night School Studio, the creators of Oxenfree, as well as Finnish mobile company Next Games and Dungeon Boss creators Boss Fight Entertainment. It also has its own studios in both Finland and Southern California.
