How to define a budget and save on spending
One of the best ways to save money is to create a family budget, a business that is not as difficult as it might seem. Here’s how to do it: Keep a journal of your expenses for a month. Take a notebook and use it to write down all the purchases made during the month in question, also including payments with credit cards and checks. At the end of the month, divide all expenses into categories. Use subcategories such as rent, bills, leisure, groceries, travel and so on. In this way, you will be able to identify the areas where costs are most concentrated and identify how to save on spending in a certain category or in all of them.
Compare your overall spending to your monthly income. This will allow you to determine if your spending level is actually sustainable. But remember that some months are inevitably more expensive than others!
Make a list of annual expenses. List all the months of the year on a sheet of paper and note the annual expenses or the most expensive periods (e.g. Christmas) for the previous year, also specifying dates and amounts.
Calculate the monthly amount you should set aside. Divide the annual payments by 12 to get the additional amount that you should keep aside each month. Do not forget to budget also any future expenses of a substantial amount (such as holidays) that are not on the list. save on heating cost
Savings tips – Respect the budget
It makes no sense to impose an unrealistic budget or that you have no intention of respecting. Here are some useful tips to keep an eye on household expenses and manage your economic resources more effectively.
Round up all amounts upwards. When calculating the budget or taking note of the expenses incurred, try to round all the amounts to the upper decimal place. Don’t open a single bank account. Spending becomes difficult if you don’t have immediate access to your funds! We, therefore, advise you to open a savings account in which to deposit the money to be allocated to the largest expenses, use the main current account only for direct debits and open a second current account with a debit card (to which you will transfer a monthly sum) for cope with daily expenses.
Get rid of credit cards and loyalty cards. If you want to learn how to set a budget and how to save money, resisting the temptation to borrow is essential. Otherwise, not only will you have to repay the amount with interest, but keeping track of the expense will also become incredibly difficult.
Use direct debits and cash payments. Better to resort to direct debits for easily predictable monthly expenses (such as bills). In this way, you will save time and you will be sure that the money destined for these purposes is not spent in other ways. For daily expenses, we recommend that you withdraw money every week. If you just spend only the money you have in your wallet, you will see that you will save even more!
Learn to distinguish necessities from unnecessary expenses. If you want to seriously learn how to manage your finances and how to save money, then you need to think about what purchases are actually needed. It’s easy to let yourself be tempted and buy new things when you don’t need to, or even decide to eat out even if you would spend half the cost of having dinner at home. If you ask yourself the question “Do I really need it?” every time you think of spending money, you will see that you will be able to save even quite large amounts.
Buy wisely. Even if it is not always easy, take some time to do some research before making a purchase and you will end up saving a lot of money. Try looking for discount coupons on the Internet, check whether buying online costs less than in the store, wait for the sales, buy your favorite items in large volumes and find independent brands whose quality is comparable to that of the best-known names.
Trade, recycle and purchase second-hand items. Saving on spending can also have a positive impact on the environment and the local community. In some areas, there are exchange and sharing of skills programs where you can teach a hobby or activity in exchange for free assistance (for example with the garden). You can also search for Freecycle websites and find items to recycle and reuse. And, if you feel like it, why not grow fruit and vegetables instead of buying it at the supermarket?
